How to find a lost AirPod, even when Find My can’t
Start with Apple’s Find My: it is built into your iPhone and, when the AirPod is charged and nearby, it can make it beep. When Find My says Offline or No location found, the steps further down help.
Quick answer
- Open Find My › Devices and choose your AirPods.
- If they’re nearby, tap Play Sound, or Find Nearby if you see it.
- If they’re offline, tap Directions to go to the last known location, and turn on Notify When Found.
- At that spot, search room by room with the Bluetooth signal, then the usual hiding places.
1. Play a sound with Find My
- Open the Find My app on your iPhone (or go to icloud.com/find on a computer).
- Tap Devices and choose your AirPods.
- If the earbuds are separated, choose Left or Right. With AirPods Pro 2 and later, you can also choose the case.
- Tap Play Sound. The AirPods play a rising series of beeps for a few minutes, or until you stop them.
Lost both, in different places? Find one, put it back in the case, then search for the other. Make sure nobody is wearing them: the sound is loud.
2. Use Find Nearby, if you have it
On recent AirPods Pro with a supported iPhone, Find My can show Find Nearby: an arrow, a distance and haptic feedback that guide you to them. If you don’t see the option, your model doesn’t support it, and Play Sound plus a slow walk is the next best thing.
3. When Find My says Offline
Offline means your iPhone can’t reach the AirPod right now. There are three usual reasons:
- It’s out of range. Tap Directions. Find My shows where the AirPods were last connected. Go there first.
- It’s in a closed case. Older AirPods go quiet in the case. Look for the case near the last location.
- The battery is flat. A dead AirPod can’t play a sound or send a signal. The last location is your best clue.
Turn on Notify When Found so your iPhone tells you if it comes back online. On AirPods 4 (ANC) and AirPods Pro 2 and later you can also Mark As Lost, which shows your contact details to whoever finds them.
4. Narrow it down by signal
Once you’re at the last known location, an AirPod that is out of its case and still charged is usually still sending a faint Bluetooth signal, even when it isn’t connected. Walk slowly from room to room: the signal is clearly stronger in the room it’s in, because walls weaken Bluetooth.
Whereabuds listens for that signal and shows how close you are: Far, Nearby, Close, Very close, Right here. Its Which room? check compares rooms for you. For AirPods it also opens Find My in one tap, so you can ring them as soon as you’re close. Free, no account.
Coming soon to the App Store5. Where AirPods usually hide
- Down the sides of sofa cushions and between the mattress and the headboard.
- Inside the duvet cover and pillowcases.
- Coat pockets, hoods and the laundry basket. Check before a wash.
- Car seat gaps and the floor under the seats.
- The bottom of bags and gym lockers.
White AirPods stand out under a torch held low against the floor, so search under furniture at floor level rather than from above.
6. If it’s really gone
Apple can replace a single AirPod or the case for a fee: contact Apple Support with your serial number (Settings › Bluetooth › the ⓘ next to your AirPods). Then turn on Notify When Left Behind in Find My, if your model supports it, so it’s less likely to happen again.
Common questions
Can you find an AirPod that is dead?
Find My shows where it was last connected, but a dead AirPod can’t play a sound or send a Bluetooth signal. Go to that last location and search by hand.
Why does Find My say my AirPod is offline?
It is out of range, in a closed case, or its battery is flat. Find My keeps the last known location and can notify you when it comes back online.
Can I find just the AirPods case?
With AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, the case appears in Find My and can play a sound. Older cases have no speaker; search the last location where the AirPods were connected.
Not AirPods? See Galaxy Buds, Sony, Bose, JBL and Beats, or the guide for any earbud.
